Our work is long-term and our expertise is in-depth mind and body work; this is how we interrupt internalized oppression and patterns of relational trauma. Our availability and the depth of service we offer make us unique. Truly accepting and knowing the mind and the body is how our people can reclaim who they are to make positive change in the world.

“I trust her with my mental health and I value the training she has developed with–and in–me.”

“My mind was opened not only into how unaddressed trauma had affected my mental and physical health, but even more into pathways to healing.”

“Asrat has also helped me release trauma stored in my body for decades, perhaps my whole life.”

“Asrat's yoga teaching and training are life-affirming experiences emphasizing positivity and promoting health and wellness.”

During the summer of 2021, I was referred to Sangeeta by a good friend who is also a therapist. As a Latina who was deep in the processing of intergenerational trauma at the time, I wanted to work with a professional who understood the nuances and my identity, cultures, experiences, and challenges. I was also looking for someone who could offer - and hold - space that was safe and nurturing.

Having had very little experience with talk therapy I knew my healing journey would likely require engagement and connection in a virtual setting given the pandemic. I did my due diligence in meeting with several therapists and immediately knew she could offer the support I needed - and have continued to rely on as I do life's work of managing trauma-informed experiences and life-changing moments like pregnancy and the birth of my son.

Sangeeta's professional disposition is an offering that is familiar, welcoming, safe, and supportive. I can't say enough about the guidance and companionship she brings to each interaction - whether in a formal session or just by checking in on me when I'm navigating tough terrain. I trust her with my mental health and I value the training she has developed with - and in - me. There is no doubt in my mind that Sangeeta is more than a therapist - she is a trusted advisor and a caring provider for me as I have worked to overcome difficult life experiences and discover peace and joy.

My journey with Asrat and Sangeeta began in 2019 when I dropped into a yoga class Asrat taught near my apartment. I was 66 years old, hoping to modestly ameliorate the inevitable wear-and-tear of advancing years. What I discovered was a new, sustainable path to greater physical and psychological strength and resilience. I have witnessed similar transformations in others, thanks to In the Streets.

Asrat, through his own inspiring example, his unshakeable belief that "anything is possible, for anyone" and his incredibly deep expertise in yoga and human physiology, helped me transform my body. With that came an even more unexpected transformation, in my mind and spirit. Asrat's yoga gift is enormous, only surpassed by the generosity of spirit and the energy with which he shares it.

Through working with Asrat and Sangeeta, including joining In the Streets yoga sessions, my mind was opened not only into how unaddressed trauma had affected my mental and physical health, but even more into pathways to healing. I am grateful to have found this in my own life, and to see how In the Streets is working to share this in communities where the need is greatest.

Asrat is truly gifted, and so generous with his time and expertise. I walked into his class four years ago with the hope of learning yoga. What I didn't expect was that this would be the start of a physical and emotional healing journey for me. Asrat completely understands how the body works, and uses his knowledge to help people become the strongest, healthiest versions of themselves. I had a C-section in 2009, and I knew that I had internal muscles that had never reconnected, but I didn't know how to reconnect them. I now, at age 54, have the strongest, most functional body I’ve ever had.

Thanks to Asrat, I’ve also experienced the power of yoga as a trauma healing mechanism. Asrat has also helped me release trauma stored in my body for decades, perhaps my whole life. I’ve cried many times in class, and actually felt emotional pain leaving my body. I know my experience is not unique, and I feel so grateful to Asrat for his dedication to strengthening and healing his students.

I met Asrat Degaga in the spring of 2018 during MGM's Yoga at the National Harbor. Asrat was the resident yoga instructor for MGM. After speaking with him and attending one of his classes, I knew there was much to learn.

Asrat is an expert yoga instructor who has become a lifelong friend. He breaks down complex concepts into manageable chunks. I have not met anyone more patient and considerate, focusing on each individual's strengths and weaknesses. In every class, Asrat teaches from the heart. He pushes us to move past our perceived limits and shows us there is so much to learn as a yogi. Asrat often says, "Yoga never ends."

Asrat's yoga teaching and training are life-affirming experiences emphasizing positivity and promoting health and wellness.
